the Original Keller Towel
A sustainability project turned rally towel fundraiser, now supporting Special Olympics Area 11, Greater Fort Worth.
Where It Started
The student, a senior at Keller High School, wanted his senior project to leave something behind. He worked with a Dallas-based recycling company to turn used t-shirts into rally towels, a sustainability-driven idea from the ground up.
The plan was simple: sell towels for $5 at football games, and send 100% of profits to the KHS PTSA scholarship fund, open to any student at the school.
Doing It the Right Way
The student knew a project like this needed the district's sign-off. He submitted a formal request to KISD administration in June, and again in August after hearing nothing back. Neither request received a response, from anyone.
The PTSA was the only organization that said yes. They committed in writing to sponsor the project and welcomed the student to sell towels from their table at games, the same table where they sold official KHS-branded merchandise. With that support, and having done everything he could to reach the district, he moved forward.
The Support Didn't Last
Not long after their sponsorship began, the PTSA told the student they were no longer continuing with the project. Around the same time, Keller Athletic Boosters (KAB) began selling their own competing towel at the KISD stadium.
We've since spoken with a PTSA member who confirmed that KAB raised concerns directly with the PTSA about the student's project. We don't know everything that was discussed, but the timing speaks for itself: the PTSA's withdrawal followed shortly after.
The student was then told to stop selling towels at stadium events, because the district hadn't given formal approval, the same approval he'd requested twice, in writing, months earlier.
What Changed, and When
Until recently, KAB's Zoom meeting link, code, and password were publicly posted on their website. On September 17, 2026, the date of their September meeting, the website was updated to state that only members are welcome. We were not admitted to that meeting.
We've since become a KAB member and requested to serve on the fundraising committee. We plan to attend the next scheduled meeting in November.
KAB has also blocked our Instagram account and does not allow us to tag them in posts. As of September 19, 2026, their last published meeting minutes are from June 2026.
Documented, and Still Unanswered
The student has documentation showing exactly where every dollar went. He submitted requests to KISD administration in June and August. Neither received a response.
In September, we published an open letter to the KAB board asking direct questions about what happened, including how KAB's own scholarship program compares to what the PTSA originally supported, and how a parent or community member is even supposed to reach the board given membership requirements that, at the time of the meeting, weren't possible to complete.
Since then, a member of the KISD Board of Education reached out and said she'd asked the superintendent, Dr. Wilson, to have someone from administration contact us. Keller ISD Board President John Birt followed up as well, confirming Dr. Wilson has been included on the correspondence and that he, or someone on his team with direct responsibility for this situation, would be in touch. We've requested a direct meeting with Dr. Wilson.
A New Beneficiary
The PTSA scholarship this project was built to support was open to any student at Keller High School. Since that partnership ended, every dollar raised through towel sales now goes to Special Olympics Area 11, Greater Fort Worth .
